Important Changes to Fire Detection Regulations

Published 20/09/2017 10:33

From 1st September 2017 BS5839:2013 has been replaced with BS5839:2017.

BS 5839-1 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around non-domestic premises.

The revised standard provides new and/or additional guidance for:

  • Manual Call Point protective covers.
  • The use of multi-sensor detectors, where they can be installed and how they are to be maintained.
  • Documenting the selection and applications of fire detectors.
  • Detector spacing on honeycomb ceilings and on ceilings with closely spaced structural beams or joists.
  • Control Indicating Equipment Monitoring and Delays to automatic transmission of a signal.
  • Standby battery requirements for systems monitored via an Intruder Alarm System.
  • The need to consider, during the design stage, how remotely situated or hard-to-access detection equipment will be maintained and tested.

The revised standard also takes into account the changes to other major fire safety standards including BS EN 54 series of standards for fire detection and fire alarm systems and BS 9999 for fire safety in commercial buildings.
