Durham University

Emtec Group, a renowned provider of mechanical and electrical services, contacted CDS to deliver advanced fire and security solutions for Durham University’s prestigious new Waterside Business School building. Led by Durham University, the project aimed to create a modern facility in the Sands area of Durham city centre alongside their existing Mill Hill Lane site. The new 10,000-square-metre building provides cutting-edge educational resources and enhanced capacity for the university’s growing student body.  

What they needed?

To support the launch of the modern Business School building, Durham University needed to install and upgrade essential security and fire systems. The scope included additions and modifications to the Gent fire alarm system, Honeywell Galaxy intruder alarm system, IP CCTV system and Paxton access control intercom systems. These systems were critical to ensuring the safety and security of the building’s advanced facilities, from lecture halls and a financial trading lab to a library and active learning spaces. 

How we helped:

We worked closely with Emtec Group to deliver security and fire solutions tailored to the unique needs of the Durham University Business School Waterside building.

Our team carried out additions and modifications to the Gent fire alarm system and installed and upgraded the Honeywell Galaxy intruder alarm system to protect the premises from potential threats. We implemented a robust IP CCTV system for site-wide surveillance and integrated Paxton access control intercom systems to manage entry efficiently. This helped to improve security and access management. These installations were completed in time for the building’s grand opening on 15th August 2024. The building now has a secure and modern environment for students, staff and visitors.
