Hexham Middle School combined Hadrian Learning Trust – a multi-academy trust – with Queen Elizabeth High School.
Many pupils transfer from Hexham Middle School to Queen Elizabeth High School to continue their secondary education. Hence, it made sense for the former to relocate to the same site as the latter, as it actually did in September 2021.
However, both institutions were redeveloped at this location last year, making for one of Northumberland’s largest ‘new school’ developments – and one in which we were delighted to help with their Fire and Security Systems.
What they needed?
The £36.1m development project has brought state-of-the-art new buildings and facilities for students at both schools. There are also new sports and leisure facilities accessible to students as well as the local community.
For this project, Hexham High School wanted us to help them with meeting a range of security and safety requirements. For example, the brief called on us to fit an intruder alarm designed to provide police and keyholder response. We were also asked to implement fire detection technology in the Theatre and Sports Halls, where standard detectors are inoperable and maintenance is not practical.
How we helped:
- Installation of an EN 50131 Grade 3 monitored intruder alarm
- BS 5839 Category L2 multi-panel network comprising three Gent Vigilon fire alarm panels
- A set of six fire aspirating systems for providing fire detection in the Theatre and Sports Halls
- Public address system to facilitate effective communication via 450 speakers split across over 15 zones
- 30 IP cameras connected to a 64-way Network Video Recorder (NVR) via five comms room data cabinets
- Four touchscreen video intercom systems and 17 access-controlled doors including lift access control
- For accessibility (and to aid compliance with the Equality Act), fixed induction loop installations at the main entrance reception desk, the Main Hall and the Theatre
- Touchscreen-integrated emergency voice communication system comprising 15 disabled refuge outstations and 22 accessible toilets connected back to 3 touchscreen master stations
